Hattoji International Villa, Lodge in Okayama, Japan

The Hattoji International Villa was originally built over 120 years ago as a kayabuki thatched-roof farm house and is set at the foot of Mt. Hattoji in Hattoji village, a 1200 year-old village. The traditional thatched-roof farm houses still outnumber the modern structures in this sun-kissed region, terraced with rice paddies that divide the mountainous forests.

The Hattoji International Villa features 4 Japanese-style rooms (Max. occupancy 12), an "irori" (traditional Japanese fireplace), a "goemonburo" (traditional Japanese bath resembling caldron) in addition to modern amenities (kitchen & shower).

Hattoji thrived over 1200 years ago as a center of Sangaku "mountain" Buddhism, followers of which lead an ascetic life in an effort to purify themselves of society's excesses. Dating from 728, monks gathered here at the base of Mt. Hattoji (elevation 539m) and built an impressive complex of temples, monasteries and accompanying buildings. Because Hattoji has retained its traditional appearance, it was the setting for the black and white movie, "Black Rain," by Shohei Imamura.
